What the sign means
Why do ants come back after I spray the kitchen?
Spraying inside rarely stops more ants arriving, because the nest is usually outside and shallow. Baits that the colony carries back are the usual method, and the source has to be tackled too.
What does a fine powder under a window frame mean?
It can be drywood termite frass, which is pellets rather than dust. Note where it falls and whether it keeps coming, then call for an inspection.
Why pests keep returning
Does watering the lawn make ant problems worse?
It can. Damp soil close to the foundation keeps nests shallow and draws ants toward the house. Keep irrigation, mulch and planting several inches off the foundation.
Why are rats in the attic instead of the yard?
Roof rats climb and nest above ground, in ivy, mature trees and attic and wall voids. Trimming growth away from the roofline and sealing small gaps helps.
Reports and licences
Who licenses pest control work in California?
The Structural Pest Control Board licenses structural pest control, and the Department of Pesticide Regulation handles pesticides statewide. Ask the technician for the company registration and the operator's licence number and check them with the Board.
What is a termite report for?
A wood-destroying organism inspection report is written by a licensed termite inspector on the Board's form when a home is sold or transferred. It records active infestation and conditions likely to lead to one.
Rodent poisons and insurance
Can I use rat poison in my yard?
California sharply limits many second-generation rodent poisons. Trapping and sealing entry points are the standard approach, and a technician will explain which products are allowed for the site.
Does my homeowners insurance cover termite or rat damage?
Usually not. Termite and vermin damage is generally excluded from a standard policy. For complaints about an insurer, the California Department of Insurance takes them.
